His list of UFC firsts is awe inspiring: first man to win titles in two weight classes; first man to win the UFC heavyweight multiple times; only man to ever win it three [...]

UFC Fight Night 24 Musings
LET’S NOT GET CRAZY WITH DAVIS, NOT YET Jon Jones’ amazing recent win over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua sent shockwaves through the 205-pound division. Not because Jones wasn’t expected to win. Jones didn’t score a highlight-reel knockout. He didn’t show amazing grit by coming back from the brink of defeat. His second-round guillotine choke, [...]
UFC Live 3 Musings
KAMPMANN-SANCHEZ WAS ONE HECK OF A SCRAP…AND A SERIOUSLY LUCRATIVE ONE, TOO Sometimes fights are so good that it really doesn’t matter to me who won or lost. The first fight between Forrest Griffin versus Stephan Bonnar qualified as that type of fight. So did Diego Sanchez versus Clay Guida. Bonnar versus Krzysztof Soszynski and [...]
Branch Preps For Toughest Test
Facing off against a crushing leg lock specialist like Rousimar Palhares is fraught with risk, but it’s a cakewalk compared to UFC fighter David Branch’s previous job. The gregarious New Yorker endured more than four years as an iron worker, widely regarded as one of America’s most dangerous and deadliest professions. “It’s hard as hell, [...]
UFC 127 Musings
SHOULD THE DRAW INSPIRE OR DISCOURAGE PENN AT WELTERWEIGHT? On Saturday night, BJ Penn did something that no other UFC fighter, other than Georges St-Pierre, has been able to do. He entered the cage with Jon Fitch and walked away without suffering a loss. That is a major accomplishment for the former champion, in and [...]
